What is the difference in PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, and OpenVPN?
PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. It is a top favorite choice for personal or business use because of the simplicity and no software requirements. Proxy Services implements PPTP encryption with MPPE 138bit cipher and can use compression or MS-CHAPv2 authentication if desired.
Because there is no software or special requirements -- users on any version of Windows, MacOSX, iPhones, Android, or BlackBerrys can use PPTP within 1 minute after signing up for a Proxy Services VPN account! PPTP is built into all these operating systems and phones already. You simply need to enter one of our server names, your username, and password.
L2TP stands for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol and is considered a more secure option than PPTP as it features more encryption algorithms. Proxy Services features L2TP encryption with IPsec protocol and AES encryption on a 256 bit key.
SSTP stands for Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol and is a good option incase your network or country can block other VPN protocols. It uses port 443 which is used by SSL (https:// websites) It features SSL authentication certificates and 2048-bit encryption. Unfortunately SSTP was created by Microsoft and will only work on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
OpenVPN is open-source technology and widely known and used around the internet. It uses SSLv3/TLSv1 protocols with other technologies to provide a reliable encrypted connection. It can use a UDP port or a TCP including 443 which is the same for SSL (https://) websites which makes the traffic on it impossible to disquinish from other websites so blocking a TCP OpenVPN connection is almost impossible. Proxy Services provides OpenVPN on all locations with UDP ports 53, 80, 992, 1194, 8888 as well as TCP ports 80, 443, 992, 1194, 8888. Featuring a 128bit - 256bit encryption, AES cipher, with a hash algorithm 160bit SHA. The control channel is TLSv1/SSLv3 DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA and 2048 bit RSA.
